The world of web design can feel like learning a new language. One minute you’re nodding along politely as someone says “hosting,” “plugins,” and “WordPress,” and the next, you’re frantically Googling, “What even IS a domain name?” But don’t sweat it – every industry has its jargon, and we’re here to translate.
Let’s break down the lingo you’re likely to hear when working on your website, so you can feel confident in every step of the process. Bonus? We’ll tell you how One Ton Creative can make all of this ridiculously easy for you.
Web Design
This is the fun, artsy stuff – the creative side of building a website. Web design is all about how your site looks and feels. It’s choosing colors, fonts, layouts, and images to create a stunning online presence that represents your brand. Think of it as the interior design of your digital home.
What we do:
We work with you to create a jaw-dropping site that looks amazing and works seamlessly.
Web Development
While web design is the aesthetics, web development is the functionality, the code that makes your site actually work. It’s what ensures your buttons button, your forms form, and your site doesn’t fall apart the second someone tries to scroll.
What we do:
We handle all the behind-the-scenes wizardry, so your site runs like a dream.
Domain Names & Domain Registration
Your domain name is your website’s address (like www.yoursite.com). Domain registration is the process of claiming that address and making it yours.
What we do:
We don’t handle domain registration, but we’re happy to point you in the right direction to get yours set up and linked to your site.
Hosting
Every website needs a place to live, and hosting is that digital home. It’s the server space where all your website files are stored so people can access your site 24/7.
What we do:
We offer hosting as a standalone service or as part of our web maintenance plans. Whether you’re looking for simple hosting or want the full package with updates and edits included, we’ve got options for every need.
Web Maintenance
Websites aren’t a “set it and forget it” deal, they need regular updates and tweaks to stay functional and secure. Web maintenance includes things like software updates, backups, security checks, and content edits.
What we do:
Our web maintenance plans include free hosting, 2 hours of monthly edits, and software updates to keep your site running smoothly. Plus, being on the plan acts like an insurance policy: if your site is hacked or experiences downtime, we’ll fix it at no extra charge. Without the plan, clients are responsible for the time required to get the site back up and running.
WordPress
WordPress is the platform we use to build our sites. It’s like the engine of a car, it powers your website and makes it run. The beauty of WordPress is that it’s super flexible, user-friendly, and perfect for creating anything from a simple blog to a fully custom business site.
What we do:
After we build your site on WordPress, we offer a free 30-minute tutorial to teach you how to make basic edits, so you feel empowered to tweak your content as needed.
Plugins
Plugins are like apps for your website. Need a contact form? There’s a plugin for that. Want to add SEO tools? Plugin. Need to boost your site’s speed? You guessed it: plugin. They’re essential for adding features and functionality to your WordPress site.
What we do:
We carefully choose and install the plugins your site needs, so you’re not overwhelmed by options (or stuck with something you don’t need).
The Bottom Line
Building, launching, and maintaining a website doesn’t have to be overwhelming-especially when you have the right team in your corner. At One Ton Creative, we handle the heavy lifting so you can focus on running your business.
